MOVEMENTS OF SEDIMENTS IN THE QINGDAO CITY COAST

  • In order to investigate the movement of sediments in the Qingdao City coast, the authors discuss the dynamic effect and material movement in this area according to the data of granularity, shallow seismic section, multiple-beam measurement and hydrodynamic process showed by 237 surface sediment samples collected during 2002-2005. The results indicate that under the special dynamical effect there are five types of sediments in the study area, which are flood-plain sedimentary system the main part of which is of ebb origin from the mouth of the Jiaozhou Bay eastwards to the outside of the barrier bar, sand ridges resulting from lateral movements of tidal currents on the sides of the tidal channel, and wave-induced gravel-bearing sands in the middle of the bay beaches and at the nearshore wave bases. The dynamical functions are mainly tides and waves in this area. Tidal currents have an effect on the longitudinal and lateral rolling rotation of sediments while waves play an important role in the material supplement for the beaches and the sorting of sediments.
