SITE SURVEY FOR THE FIRST 300 m CORING HOLE OF THE CHINA CONTINENTAL SCIENTIFIC DRILLING PROGRAM IN THE SOUTHERN YELLOW SEA (SYS)

  • The first 300 m drilling hole of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Program (CSDP), aiming at stratigraphic study of the Quaternary deposits on the Chinese continental shelf, is selected in the South Yellow Sea (SYS). Upon the technical requirements of the drilling, and the geological-geophysical conditions of the SYS, such as topography, water depth, thickness of Quaternary sediments, sedimentary evolutionary history, based on the data of multi-channel seismics, single-channel seismics, shallow seismic profiles and boreholes nearby, and after careful consideration of favorable and unfavorable conditions, a reasonable drilling site is finally selected. In addition, a litho-stratigraphic column was provided upon the integration of all the data mentioned above. The successful implementation of the coring suggests that the method of hole site selection and stratigraphic prediction is effective.
