A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON HAZARDOUS GEOLOGY IN THE BOHAI STRAIT

  • The Bohai Strait, a water-sediment exchange channel between the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea, is rather complicated in geological environment, and there bear various geohazardous factors. High-resolution seismic data and previous research products are used in this paper to identify the types of marine geohazards and their distribution. The main types of geohazards in the Bohai Strait include the tidal sand ridge, tidal erosion gutter, shallow gas, buried paleo-channel, active fault, irregular bedrock topography and so on. There are both differences and connections in the distribution and origin of those hazards. Tectonic movements and river-sea interaction since late Pleistocene are the main factors, which may influence the genesis and development of geohazards in the Strait. The hazardous geological maps of the study area, which are completed recently, will provide a basis for engineering construction, disaster prevention and mitigation.
