TRAP CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MAIN DEEP-WATER BASINS IN THE WORLD

  • Based on the analysis of fifteen deep-water basins which situated in the eastern Brazilian continental margin, West African passive continental margin, Gulf of Mexico and the Northwest Shelf of Australia, the article sums up three major trap types i.e. structural trap, stratigraphic trap and compound trap and there are eight trap styles included in these three types. The structural trap which include anticlinal trap, fault trap and salt diapir trap are most important. The traps in the Gulf of Mexico Basin, Campos Basin and Santos Basin in Brazil, Aaiun-Tarfaya Basin, Senegal Basin, Rio Muni Basin, Gabon Basin, Lower Congo Basin and Kwanza Basin in West Africa are all with salt. The tectonic movement of the salt generates abundant diapir anticlinal traps, salt diapir traps, stratigraphic traps and compound traps which are relevant with salt movement.
