PETROLEUM GEOLOGY OF THE CRETACEOUS IN THE NORTHERN DEPRESSION OF SOUTH YELLOW SEA BASIN: EVIDENCE FROM SEISMIC ATTRIBUTE ANALYSIS

  • To enhance our understanding in the characteristics of petroleum geology and to improve the reliability of sedimentary facies description within Cretaceous strata at the South Yellow Sea Basin, seismic attribute analysis was conducted using multi-channel 2D seismic and well data at the Northern Depression of the Basin. In this study, attribute analysis reveals that at the flank of the depression,Cretaceous strata are well preserved with a constant thickness, little deformation and good continuity.Whereas at the depocentre, a faulted zone with chaotic seismic features is highlighted using structural attributes.Such evidence implies that later tectonic events have disturbed the lateral continuity of the strata at the depocentre. These minor faults may have created pathways and assisted hydrocarbon migration, hence complicates the existing hydrocarbon accumulation system and allows interpretation of different regional source-reservoir models.
