HYDRODYNAMIC RESPONSE OF CHENIER COAST TO STORM SURGES ON THE ABANDONED YELLOW RIVER DELTA PLAIN

  • Along the coastline from the Dakou river mouth to Taoer river mouth in SW Bohai Bay,chenier ridges have been found at the places of Dakouhedao,Gaotuozi,Jijiapuzi and Wangzidaos.Historical documents, sea charts and satellite images show that the characteristics of the coastline were formed by the shifting of the Yellow River mouth and the consequent evolution of the delta plain.A storm surge, which came once every 50 years, happened on October 10-12,2003.The numerical model of FVCOM +SWAN is adopted in this paper to simulate and investigate the nearshore wind-driven wave, and flow fields for different coastline configurations. The results demonstrate that the dimensions, shapes and distributions of chenier ridges are controlled and reworked by coastline configurations, material sources and ENE,NE winddriven hydrodynamics. The intensity of the storm surge, flow power and wave height will be reduced moderately by the chenier ridges due to the sheltering effect of the long breakwaters of the Huanghua Port and the Binzhou Port. This study will help preserve the existing chenier system and favor the formation of new chenier ridge.
